Early/Locally Advanced Stage

In Early or Locally Advanced breast cancers, the cancer cells have not spread beyond the breast and or surrounding lymph nodes. Treatment goals is to cure! That is to reduce risk of breast cancer recurrence or spread to other parts of the body.

Surgery

Surgery is a procedure to remove the tumour and other affected areas such as the lymph nodes.

Some possible procedures include:

Breast Conserving Surgery (BCS)(1)
Only the part of the breast that has cancer is removed. This includes the tumour, some surrounding tissue and possibly the lymph nodes.

Oncoplastic Breast Conserving Surgery(1)
In addition to treating the cancer, there are options available to maximize or avoid compromise in cosmetic outcomes following breast cancer surgery.
Mastectomy with Breast Reconstruction(1)
The whole breast is removed in this procedure.
Axillary Surgery(1)
The lymph nodes located in the armpit that are found to have cancer cells are removed.
