What is HER2-positive breast cancer?

The Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2 (HER2) protein exists in breast cells to facilitate normal growth. In HER2-positive breast cancer, the HER2 protein is produced in excess, leading to tumour growth.(1)
This is an aggressive form of breast cancer that makes up 20% of all breast cancers. If left untreated, it is associated with quicker disease progression and poorer chances of survival compared to HER2-negative breast cancers.(2)

Treatment Journey

In the treatment of HER2-positive breast cancer, HER2 receptors(3) are targeted so as to block the signals causing cancer cells to grow and multiply.
